Chris Messina gives a great overview of what the DiSo project is, and more importantly aims to be.

I’m working on my term project for my Online Social Networks class which is to implement a very basic distributed social network and I’m finding more and more that there is a lot of ambiguity in what someone means when they toss around the term ‘distributed social network’. Frankly I can’t seem to settle on a definition myself, but I think that the core of the next big wave of innovation online is going to contain a lot of the concepts under the distributed social network umbrella.

Chris points out the great improvement of social interaction on the web from the guest books of a few years back to our multi-billion dollar social network giants today. It makes sense that this trend will only continue, but only when the some of the unsettled issues privacy, intellectual property, and digital identity are settled
